Education Officer
I know societies would naturally come under Jerry’s remit, but I am sure he will not mind letting me shout about our fantastic academic societies!
Today I hosted the Students’ Union’s first Academic Societies Forum with tea and cake; this was one of the best afternoons I have ever had in work because it gave me a chance to talk to groups of students I have never spoken to before. I speak everyday with Subject and College Reps, but academic societies are quickly becoming one of my favourite aspects of my job.
Â
At the forum we discussed relationships between societies and departments, socials, study sessions and other issues this particular group of societies are facing...my mind was blown at how many great things the committees were planning! These guys are AWESOME!
Some societies have great contacts within their departments, and I hope through my own work I will enable EVERY academic society to have a strong relationship with staff in that area of the University.
Most societies liked the idea of meeting regularly to consider joint events, study sessions and even visits around the country together. With the help of the fabulous Academic Societies Rep, Robbie Mahy, I am sure all combined efforts and activities will enhance student life at Swansea University.
Other societies asked for help to fill the gap between society and subject reps. What a FABULOUS idea! Plans are now underway to make sure all subject reps are members of their department’s societies; this will assist the society’s link to the University and has a representative sitting on Student-Staff Committees.

This afternoon I pledged to the academic societies that I am fully dedicated to help promote all activities of all academic societies. These societies help students with their education, employability and assignments...I am so unbelievably proud of every committee member! I have now prepared several tasks for myself and the University to support these societies in the best possible way.
If your department does not have a society, please email myself or Jerry and we can work together to create one. The more the merrier!
