SWANSEA LABOUR RESPOND TO STUDENTS' UNION CALLS TO COME CLEAN ON FEES
The Labour Party's Candidate for Parliament, Geraint Davies, is the first to respond to Swansea University Students' Union's calls for candidates in Swansea West (the seat that includes the University.
Geraint told the Union that:
I agree that tuition fees should not be raised and that any review should include representatives from the National Union of Students and groups who are underrepresented in universities - in particular those least well off.Further investment in higher education will in time be recovered from graduates generating higher earnings and therefore paying more tax so I don't accept that there is a coherent economic case for raising fees. In fact the fear of debt, in particular amongst less well off groups, means those who avoid university due to fee growth would otherwise have earnt more and paid more tax so the public purse loses in the medium term from raising fees
Student President Luke Young commented that:
I am very happy that Geraint has been so on the ball with this issue. We welcome his pledge against lifting the current cap on Tuition Fees and think that he raises some good points about the lack of an economic case for higher fees.
He has engaged in the debate. I look forward to the other candidates in Swansea West doing the same.
