► Plaid Cymru response

PLAID CANDIDATE SUPPORTS UNION POSITION

Former SU President and current parliamentary candidate for Plaid Cymru, Harri Roberts, has strongly endorsed the Students' Union and the NUS' stance on tuition fees:

As Plaid Cymru's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Swansea West I have no hesitation whatsoever in giving my full suport to the NUS Campaign against higher tuition fees.

Plaid Cymru has consistently opposed top up fees, and as recently as this summer reaffirmed the party's position at its National Council.

I was fortunate enough to enjoy five happy years at Swansea University - one of them as the Students' Union's sabbatical President - and greatly value the life-enhancing experiences of University life. During three years on the SU Executive I came into frequent contact with students suffering financial difficulty - and that was at a time when we enjoyed student grants, and our tuition fees were paid for us by the local authorities. Even then, most of us left college in debt (as I did) and started on our career paths funding overdrafts.

Today I believe the position is intolerable - many leave college with over twenty-thousand-pound debts crippling their short term financial future. Those from low-income families experience severe difficulties and are often put off the idea of pursuing University education. They are terrified of contemplating longer degree courses so restricing entry to such courses as medicine to the "middle classes". It is inexplicable that a Government and Tory opposition, including several former NUS Leaders - and almost all of whom enjoyed the benefits of student grants and not having to pay tuition fees - should be so reluctant to properly invest in future generations.

I strongly believe that having enjoyed such benefits themselves politicians should be working hard to ensure that those entering colleges now should enjoy as much as possible of the same benefit, and I certainly would campaign hard to REDUCE tuition fees and work towards the position where higher education is fully - and adequately - supported, including properly financing students' period in college.

Harri Roberts

Three out of the four main party candidates in Swansea West have announced their support against higher tuition fees and for the NUS Pledge, with the Conservatives promising that "a considered response" is on it's way.
