On the 13th of July the Home Office announced changes in plans for visa regulations for international students in further and higher education.
The Minister of State for Immigration, James Brokenshire, said these measures have been proposed in order to “reduce net migration and tackle immigration abuse, whilst maintaining an excellent offer for students who wish to study at our world-class Universities”
Swansea University Students’ Union feels that these changes would be detrimental for international students and the wider student body for the following reasons:
· International students’ who’ve studied in the UK would need to leave the UK immediately upon completion of their studies.
· International Students studying at college level that are interested in foundation courses at higher education institutions will no longer be able to do so under the Tier 4 visa rout
· International students will be unable to work at all during term time where they previously had a ten hour a week limit.
It is our opinion that these restrictions are wholly unfair and will remove intentional students’ desire to remain in the UK for Higher Education. These changes would be detrimental to the student experience of international students and would unfairly inhibit their ability to support their studies in the UK through employment.
As a result, Swansea University Students’ Union will be taking strong steps to campaign against these changes.

Ar Orffennaf 13eg, cyhoeddwyd y Swyddfa Gartref newidiadau yn y cynlluniau am reoliadau teitheb am fyfyrwyr rhyngwladol sydd mewn addysg bellach ac addysg uwch. Dywedodd Y Gweinidog Gwladol dros Fewnfudo, James Brokenshire, fod y mesurau hyn wedi’u cynnig er mwyn “lleihau mudo net a mynd i’r afael â chamdriniaeth mewnfudiad, wrth gynnal cynnig ardderchog i fyfyrwyr sydd am astudio yn ein Prifysgolion o safon fyd-eang”
Mae Undeb Myfyrwyr Prifysgol Abertawe yn teimlo y byddai’r newidiadau hyn yn niweidiol i fyfyrwyr rhyngwladol a’r corff myfyrwyr ehangach am y rhesymau canlynol:
· Byddai rhaid i fyfyrwyr rhyngwladol sydd wedi astudio yn y DU adael y DU yn syth ar ôl cwblhau eu hastudiaethau.
· Ni fydd modd i fyfyrwyr rhyngwladol sy’n astudio ar lefel coleg ac sydd â diddordeb mewn cyrsiau sylfaenol mewn sefydliadau addysg uwch wneud hyn dan lwybr teitheb Haen 4, bellach.
· Ni fydd modd i fyfyrwyr rhyngwladol weithio o gwbl yn ystod y tymor lle oedd ganddynt derfyn deg awr yr wythnos yn flaenorol.
Yn ein barn ni, mae’r cyfyngiadau hyn yn gwbl annheg a byddant yn cael gwared ar awydd myfyrwyr rhyngwladol i aros yn y DU am Addysg Uwch. Byddai’r newidiadau hyn yn niweidiol i brofiad myfyrwyr rhyngwladol a byddant yn rhwystro eu gallu i gefnogi eu hastudiaethau yn y DU trwy gyflogaeth yn annheg.
O ganlyniad, bydd Undeb Myfyrwyr Prifysgol Abertawe yn cymryd camau cryf i ymgyrchu yn erbyn y newidiadau hyn.
