Swansea has become the first students’ union in Wales to adopt the recommendations of NUS Wales’ Welsh Language Charter.
Students made history by voting to implement the charter with a resounding 79% yes vote after a motion was proposed.
The charter seeks to improve Welsh language provision and the experience of Welsh speaking students by outlining minimum standards for Unions. The move follows the new legal obligations on the Welsh language that all public bodies are obliged to adopt.
The motion proposer Lewys Arôn said “Equality and fair play are values that Swansea University, the union and local community support. By adopting the charter the Union takes a giant leap forward in its commitment to the Welsh language.
“The union has come on leaps and bounds this year in terms of provision and the passing of this motion is the accumulation of all the hard work done this year.”
A timeline for adoption will now be drawn up by the Union executive board.
