Swansea University Students’ Union have been recognised for their award winning media for the second year in a row.
Samantha Booth was awarded student journalist of the year and the Siren were named as best student media at last night’s NUS Wales Awards. Alongside this success SU TV was also nominated for the best student media category.
Award winner Samantha thanked everyone who has supported her saying ‘’I’m so honoured to receive the student journalist of year award. Being part of the student media has been the greatest part of my university experience. I’ve learnt more than I ever expected and I hope these skills will benefit me greatly when I try to pursue a career in journalism in the future.
‘’I was also delighted to see SU-TV shortlisted in its first year. It can only mean hopeful things for the station in the future.‘’
Samantha’s was rewarded for her dedication in setting up SU TV and also the hard work she has put in to student newspaper the Waterfront.
Siren Editor Zoe Alford said '’It's great that Swansea University had three separate nominations in Student Media categories this year. Winning this award has been so significant for Natalie and myself because we receive no funding or support from any outside body. We'd like to encourage all our writers, whether they want to be journalists or not, to engage with not only the university, but with wider community around them.’’
Student media is often recognised as a development tool for students wishing to pursue a career in this sector and we have seen many students go on to have successful careers in journalism and media.
This is the second time the Siren have won best student media award and last year Swansea student Chris Flynn was also named best student journalist.
The Siren and Samantha will now be automatically entered in to the NUS UK Awards later this year.
