The Student Switch Off has started again this term and the first competition of the year has begun offering students the chance to win great prizes whilst saving the environment.
There are loads of great prizes to give out in our photo competitions, like Ben and Jerry’s (big tubs!), nightclub tickets, LUSH Gift Boxes and NUS Extra cards.
The competition will be open for a few days and all you need to do is upload a picture of yourself saving energy onto the facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/swanseasso). The picture which gets the most likes wins, simple hey!
Here are some very easy to follow tips on how you can save energy and win your prizes:
Switch off lights and appliances:
While most people are already pretty good at switching lights and gadgets off it’s always worth a reminder. There is no real point in having a light on in your room, with the door closed and you not in it; it’s just a waste. So remember pop those lights off before you leave and any appliances not actually on but left on standby.
Put a lid on it:
Putting a lid on your saucepan reduces the amount of energy required to cook your food by up to 90% AND cooks your food quicker. Double-win!
Don’t over fill the kettle:
There are some times in life when you just need a cup of tea. Don’t waste your time by overfilling up the kettle with more water than you need. As the guys below know, 200ml is plenty of water for a single cuppa and it’ll boil in no time. You can use the time you’ve saved to start that reading you’ve been putting off, rr more realistically to browse Facebook aimlessly.
Put a layer on, not the tropical settings of the heating:
When things get chilly, instead of turning up your radiator just put on a jumper or a nice jacket like the suave gentlemen to the right. A jumper adds a whopping 3 degrees of warmth to your body and often makes you look even more stylish.
