VARSITY**VARSITY**VARSITY

The Welsh Varsity is a contest between Swansea University and Cardiff University. 25 different sports will compete throughout the day at different venues with one aim - to smash the opposition! The grand finale is the Men's Rugby Union match held in the Millennium Stadium. Jonathon Vaughan's men are already preparing... So it is game on!

At 10am coaches from Swansea campus will leave full of supporters in green and white, chanting, singing and having a ball.

Day sports start as early as 9.30, so Swansea need to get down early to turn the town green and white! As a player, having hundreds of people supporting and wanting you to win is an amazing feeling.

The Millennium stadium is the home of Welsh rugby and as students we get the run of it for one evening – over 5000 Swansea students are expected to join together in support of our team, so don’t miss out! We need to show Cardiff that there’s more of us, that we’re louder and most importantly that we’re BETTER!

How do I get a ticket?

With our one day package sale happening earlier this term most of you have already purchased a ticket.

If you feel like you’re missing out, you can still purchase a ticket here before Monday.

On Monday from 1pm you can pick up your ticket, shirt and goodies.

Varsity is the best day of the year BY FAR, so buy your ticket now – don’t miss out!

<a10:updated>2013-03-15T12:08:00Z</a10:updated>

Why should you GIVE IT A GO at a society?

Why should you GIVE IT A GO at a society?

On the 21st January GIVE IT A GO week is back in Swansea where the Students’ Union sports clubs and societies put on loads of events for you to take part in and try out before signing up. Most of these are free and very cheap so make sure you get involved. As the Sports Officer I can easily persuade you to join a sports club so I have been given the challenge to tell you about societies. I have many friends involved with societies and before joining the students’ union I probably underestimated how fantastic societies are and how hard the union works to provide for all of them. Using the word SOCIETY here are my top reasons of why you should GIVE IT A GO this week.

SOCIABLE – Some of my lifelong friends were made through my club and I know that societies are the same, whether it is a party night in Sin City or a quiet film night at Taliesin you get to hang out and bond with people that have something in common with.

OPPORTUINTES –being part of a society offers amazing opportunities whether you are part of it or not, many get to visit specialists and famous people within that area. It also provides the opportunity to show off your talents and work with other people, A Night at the Musicals shows how the performing arts societies can work together as well as providing the spectators with the opportunity to watch something fabulous.

COMMUNITY – society and sports club life becomes your family and community for many people, they know what you like and what you don’t, whether this is a small society with 10 members or one with over 500 you feel like you are part of something that has its own name, logo, bank account and pigeon hole.

INDIVIDUAL - every society has a unique personality about it, with over 80 to choose from you can choose the exact one that fits in with you and helps you to grow as a person. Being part of the society helps you grow as an individual and will hopefully help you in the future.

EMPLOYABILITY – I know this sounds very cliché but the skills you get for being a member of a society or a committee member makes you more employable, you learn team work, time keeping, organisation, management, people skills and a whole lot more. Go to the employability fair on the 21st January and see what skills you have picked up that can transferred to your CV.

TALENTED – whether you have one or many talents there is a space to show them off to everyone within the University. SHOW OF YOUR TALENT and GIVE IT A GO this week.

YUMMY – Lots of society events have free food to keep you all entertained which is always a winner!

So check out all that we have to offer on our website www.swansea-union.co.uk.

<a10:updated>2013-01-21T09:14:00Z</a10:updated>

Love Sport? Currently Jobless in July?

Love Sport? Currently Jobless in July? Run to be the Sports Officer?

Over a year ago the Students’ Union had a referendum and asked the question ‘Do you want a student representative for Sport in the SU?’ You, our students came out on mass and answered YES. This now means there are 7 Full Time Officer Roles and one is entirely dedicated to Sport.

The move into the SU from the AU this year has been very challenging as expected and with elections just around the corner my job is up for grabs again. The job of a Full Time Officer is strange, you are in a sense your own boss, and with Sport being totally new in the SU I have spent a lot of time developing the role as I go along and learning what is and isn’t the right thing to do. After 6 months in the job I think I have it pretty sussed, so here are a few of the things that I do.

	1. University

	· Sport is run jointly with the University so I spend a lot of time working, meeting and arguing with them. Sometimes they forget that I was a student playing sport only 12 months ago. I have spent a lot of time working on the new University Sports Strategy and trying to get it just right for you. Do you think you can stand up to the University and tell them what is right for sport?

	2. Events

	· One of the best things about my job is Wednesday nights, I get to go out and chat to all the Sports Clubs about how they are doing and the matches they have played. I also get to play a major role in the biggest and best event of the year, VARSITY 2013. Socialising and organising parties is a fantastic aspect of my job and makes the extremely challenging moments worthwhile.

	3. Union

	· Now that sports are in the SU we have so many more resources to help us, working with over 50 members of staff rather than just one is one of the best things about the job. With 6 other Officers around you at all times then how can you complain?

	4. Opportunities

	· Sport is changing. With the new campus, hype of the Olympics and Sport Strategy there is so many places for you to have an impact and a say. The University have put Sport as one of the top agenda items and are willing to put a decent amount of resources into it, if you have an amazing idea they will sit up and listen to you.

	5. Diversity

	· Finally, my job is one of the most varied which makes it exciting. One day I am sitting in a Council meeting which is one of the highest decision making boards in the University, the next I am freezing my socks of down at Sketty Lane watching a match then partying with all the Wind Street lovers on a Wednesday night, dressing as an elf giving out Christmas presents to amazed International Students, sitting as Chair of a disciplinary board and finally having a ball with all the other Officers.

Don’t get me wrong this job is hard, when your teams are in the paper every other week and you have to tell the top of the University that actually the sports teams aren’t badly behaved and they are all lovely people who deserve more money while they stare back taking notes in a little black book it takes a lot of positivity to get up and come into work. But the feeling that you might actually be helping just one person by being in at 9am the next day is worth it (as well as not having essays or exams in January while everyone else does).

If you think that you can do any of these then pick up a Nomination form on 24/01/13 and run to be an officer, come and chat to me about the job or even follow me around for the day.

<a10:updated>2013-01-10T15:27:08Z</a10:updated>

Sport Swansea has arrived!

Sport Swansea is finally here with a brand new logo, Facebook page and card.

Here are a few helpful hints as to how to get started and why this is a must have to get the most out of your time at Swansea.

	What is Sport Swansea?

Sport Swansea is the new brand that all sport sits under, from the facilities in the Sports Centre to the Clubs in the SU.

Why do I need a Sport Swansea membership?

If you want to join any sports club or team you need a membership, this is mainly for insurance purposes but it does offer many other benefits for just £15 including

	£1 off Wednesday nights

	Discounts on sporting events

	Discounts on sports tickets

	Use of recreational sports cupboard

	Discount for Varsity ticket

	Sports clubs benefits participation

	Preferential discounted training times

T shirt for first 2000 members

	Discounts at the LC

Sadie has designed us brand new cards to go with this membership, these cards will be available for you to pick up at the Sport Swansea Showcase on the 3rd October in the Freshers’ Marquee, make sure you bring a passport photo and ID to pick up your new card. Stalls are being set up outside Fulton House on Wednesday mornings, just in case you can't make it to the showcase.

	Is it worth it?

Yes! Whether you have played a sport all your life or you are trying something new and exciting we have something to offer you all. I made my best friends being part of the Sailing Club and wouldn’t have had as good a time at University if I hadn’t signed up. Wednesday nights are known as ‘sports night’ but the whole of Wind Street to play with it is certainly one of the bests.

	Having problems?

If you are coming to Swansea for the first time in September make sure you use your new email address that is given by the University and is made up of your studentnumber@swansea.ac.uk as your registration name. If you are still having problems email web@swansea-union.co.uk.

	How do I get it?

Go to http://swansea-union.co.uk/activities-old/sportswansea/ and get fit!

Over the past few weeks, the greatest sporting event in the world was held in London. The Olympics brings together all nations, religions and cultures. No matter where you are from, you are respected by the rest of the world for the sporting talent you can demonstrate.

None of the athletes are judged by their backgrounds, which makes it one of the greatest shows of unity across the world.

With the Olympics being held in London (one of the most multicultural cities in the world) it is the perfect host to bring out sporting excellence from around the world.

Congratulations should go to one of our students, Georgia Davies, who we saw compete in the 100m backstroke and made it to the semi-finals.

Even though Olympic fever is already starting to fade, we should remember the Paralympic Games are just starting, and we should celebrate them with the same enthusiasm!

A warm welcome from the SU goes out to the Mexico and New Zealand teams who are staying and training at Swansea before the games. We hope you enjoy it, and best of luck.

Swansea University also sees three of its students compete in the Paralympics this year. Gemma Almond and Matt Whorwood will compete in the swimming and David Smith in the Boccia, a precision sport similar to bowls.

Good Luck to all three of you, we will be cheering you along from the other end of the M4!

<a10:updated>2012-08-17T14:51:00+01:00</a10:updated>
