As a nonbinary person I've dealt with some of the difficulties transgender and nonbinary people go through first-hand. Reaching out to the university with questions can be daunting enough, and can be even more so when you're used to facing ignorance or bigotry.
I already have experience in this area from working as a class representative both years of college. It taught me confidence with speaking in student meetings and working with the college presidents, so I'm already used to many aspects of this role and will be able to quickly adapt to the rest.
My personal experiences, years of involvement in LGBTQ communities and what I’ve learned from other LGBTQ friends all mean I’m well-versed in the issues we face, which is invaluable for this position.
(I’m also miraculously unafraid of making phone calls and writing emails. I feel like I must use this power for good.)
Now – why should you vote for me?
Trans visibility and safety is already something very important to me personally. Yes, my goal is to be the voice for those who wouldn't feel comfortable using theirs. But it's just as important to me to create a place for trans folk to find clear resources and feel safe leaving suggestions, without that apprehension of not being understood.
Knowing a trans and nonbinary resource existed before coming to this university would have reassured me that I wouldn't be alone in my experience. I want to give that visibility to the next years of trans people that study at Swansea, not only the people already here.
Some ideas I already have include a webpage somewhere on the one of the University websites that has

a method to leave anonymous suggestions and comments (e.g., an online form)

ways to contact me and other LGBTQ officers directly for university suggestions and possibly to simply have someone to talk to about LGBTQ stuff

information about support groups, societies and relevant upcoming events.
Outside of that I will work to find out what options we have to make trans and nonbinary folk feel less alienated. This may include pushing to remove unnecessary gendering on university forms where possible and adding alternative options where not, and encouraging more staff/student representatives to put their pronouns by their names in emails if comfortable.

Fel person anneuaidd, rydw i wedi delio â rhai o'r anawsterau y mae pobl drawsryweddol ac anneuaidd yn dioddef eu hunain. Gall estyn allan i'r Brifysgol gyda chwestiynau fod yn ddigon brawychus, a gall fod hyd yn oed yn fwy felly pan rydych chi wedi arfer wynebu anwybodaeth neu ragfarn.
Mae gen i brofiad eisoes yn y gwaith hwn fel cynrychiolydd dosbarth am ddwy flynedd yn y coleg. Fe ddysgodd i mi fod yn hyderus wrth drafod mewn cyfarfodydd myfyrwyr a gweithio gyda llywyddion y coleg, felly rydw i eisoes wedi arfer â sawl agwedd ar y rôl hon a byddaf yn gallu addasu'n gyflym i'r gweddill.
