2021 FTO and PTO Elections

The Spring Elections are your opportunity to vote in your new student leaders of Swansea SU, or stand to be one of them! We are electing a team of 6 Full-Time Officers (FTO) and 12 out of 18 Part-Time Officers (PTO) to lead Swansea SU and sit on the Executive Committee. (The other 6 PTO positions will be elected in the Autumn Elections, as will any PTO positions that do not get filled this Spring.)

President

This is a full-time paid position. Mae'r swydd yma'n llawn amser. Full Time Officer positions are demanding full time jobs; which students will undertake either once they've graduated or if they choose to take a year out from their studies. Mission 

No hierarchical structures exist in Swansea University Students’ Union; the President is a coordinating and communication focused role, which is responsible for co-ordinating the Full-Time and Part-Time Officer teams.  

The President will support and help organise the efforts of each individual Full-Time Officer ensuring that their work is supported and valued within the Union. Focal to the role is communicating to and with the membership, ensuring that the Union is an inclusive organisation that celebrates diversity and the voice of its members. The President will ensure that positive and productive relations are maintained with the University and other partners, whilst ensuring that in their co-ordinating role, their team members and students voices are heard and valued. The President will also be key to the co-ordination of and compliance with Union policy, including the union’s commitment and legal responsibilities with regards to bilingualism.  

Requirements: Must be an enrolled student at Swansea University and confirmed by the institution as such. Current Full-Time Officers in their first year of office are also entitled to stand for the post. You would mostly be required to work across both Bay and Singleton campuses and occasionally on Carmarthen campus. 

Responsibilities of a SUSU officer 

  • Ensure a high profile is maintained with the membership to promote the work of the Full-Time Officer team and of SUSU. 

  • Support Part Time Officers’ roles and campaigns.  

  • Support Student Voice in the delivery of the Speak Week campaign 

  • Ensure that the Membership’s views are researched and represented, regardless of personal opinion.  

  • Actively engage with all Union democratic meetings and report to them as relevant.  

  • Be mindful at all times of the overall mission and values of Swansea University Students’ Union and work with colleagues to achieve the role’s mission and the objectives of the Union’s Strategic Plan.  

  • Lead on at least 1 liberation campaign in relation to the role (e.g. Education Officer on Attainment Gap, Sports Officer, on Mental Health in Sport, etc).  

Responsible To  

The Trustees Board and Swansea University Students’ Union Membership as outlined in the Articles of Governance.    

As a Full-Time Officer your performance will be reviewed by the Trustees Board, Officer Responsibility Group and Audit Committee. You will also be required to adhere with the Officer Code of Conduct and provisions of the Articles of Governance & Schedules. Your terms of conditions of employment (including salary) are reviewed and considered by the Remuneration Committee.  

On a day-to-day basis you will receive support and direction from the Chief Executive Officer. It is noted that you will also have a close working relationship with Union Officers, Union staff members and University colleagues.

Swansea University Students’ Union Trustee Board 

As a Full-Time Officer, you will automatically be a Trustee of Swansea University Students’ Union for the duration of your time in office. 

Trustees are central and essential to effectiveness of the Students’ Union. As a Trustee, you have the ultimate legal responsibility for keeping the charity solvent, focussed on its stated objectives, for directing its strategy and ensuring it stays within the law. 

Swansea University Trustee Board 

As President, you will automatically become a Trustee of Swansea University. You may be removed as a Trustee if you fail to meet the requirements set out by the Charity Commission.

Education Officer

This is a full-time paid position. Mae'r swydd yma'n llawn amser. Mission  

The Education Officer is focused upon ensuring that our students are getting the most out of their education – both locally, nationally and UK Wide. Ensure students play an active role in quality assurance and quality enhancement processes.  

Requirements: Must be an enrolled student at Swansea University and confirmed by the institution as such. Current Full-Time Officers in their first year of office are also entitled to stand for the post. You would mostly be required to work across both Bay and Singleton campuses and occasionally on Carmarthen campus. 

Responsibilities of a SUSU officer 

  • Ensure a high profile is maintained with the membership to promote the work of the Full-Time Officer team and of SUSU. 

  • Support Part Time Officers’ roles and campaigns.  

  • Support Student Voice in the delivery of the Speak Week campaign 

  • Ensure that the Membership’s views are researched and represented, regardless of personal opinion.

Societies and Services Officer

Mission  

The Societies and Services Officer is focused on ensuring that societies gain fair representation and support from the Union. The Societies and Services officer ensures that the services the students want, and need are developed and that the membership get value for money from their Union. Whilst all full-time officers are responsible for the Unions finances, this officer is key to ensuring that students are aware of where resources are allocated and feel a part of the decision-making process.  

Requirements: Must be an enrolled student at Swansea University and confirmed by the institution as such. Current Full-Time Officers in their first year of office are also entitled to stand for the post. You would mostly be required to work across both Bay and Singleton campuses and occasionally in Carmarthen.

Sports Officer

The Sports Officer is focused on overseeing the running of sports clubs on campus and ensuring that sports team members gain fair representation and support from the Union and University. 

Requirements: Must be an enrolled student at Swansea University and confirmed by the institution as such. Current Full-Time Officers in their first year of office are also entitled to stand for the post. You would mostly be required to work across both Bay and Singleton campuses and occasionally on Carmarthen campus.

Swyddog Materion Cymraeg - Welsh Affairs Officer

Amcan 

Bydd y Swyddog Materion Cymraeg yn darparu cymorth a chynrychiolaeth i fyfyrwyr sy’n siarad Cymraeg ac/neu o Gymru ac/neu yn astudio unrhyw ran o’u cwrs drwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg yn ystod eu hamser ym Mhrifysgol Abertawe. Fel rhan o dîm Swyddogion Llawn-amser Undeb Myfyrwyr Abertawe, bydd y Swyddog Materion Cymraeg hefyd yn cynrychioli pob myfyriwr y Brifysgol. 

Bydd y Swyddog Materion Cymraeg yn gweithio’n agos â chynrychiolwyr Academi Hywel Teifi a’r Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, Gwasanaeth Cyfieithu Cymraeg y Brifysgol a chymdeithasau a chlybiau chwaraeon cyfwng Cymraeg i sicrhau bod yr Undeb a’r Brifysgol yn amgylcheddau cynhwysol sy’n gweithredu’n ddwyieithog. 

Bydd y Swyddog Materion Cymraeg yn canolbwyntio ar sicrhau darpariaeth cyfrwng Cymraeg o fewn addysg, lles, diwylliant, celf, chwaraeon a gweithgareddau eraill yn y Brifysgol. Welfare Officer

Mission  

The Welfare Officer provides support and representation for all Swansea University students during their time here. In fulfilling this role, students will be informed of the risks which face them and the support and advice available to them.

Current Full-Time Officers in their first year of office are also entitled to stand for the post. You would mostly be required to work across both Bay and Singleton campuses and occasionally on Carmarthen campus.

Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Officer

Part Time Officers play a crucial role in engaging with various different groups of students and hold the Full Time Officers to account. They volunteer their energy and time. Mae Swyddogion Rhan Amser yn chwarae rhan hanfodol wrth ymgysylltu â grwpiau amrywiol o fyfyrwyr a dal y Swyddogion Llawn Amser i gyfrif. Maent yn gwirfoddoli eu hamser a'u hegni i gyn.
The BME Officer role will work closely with the Full Time Officers and full time staff to help highlight, research and campaign on issues that affect BME students across the University and to campaign on issues such as anti-racism & Black History Month.

The Environment Officer will work closely with the Full Time Officers and full time staff to help highlight, research and campaign on sustainability and environmental issues in the University and Students’ Union.

General Secretary

Work closely with the President to ensure the smooth running of the democratic procedures of the Union. Assist the President in the organisation and running of Student Forums. Ensure that the minutes and actions of democratic meetings are accessible by the membership. Hold the FTOs to account as a member of the Officer Responsibility Group.

International Students' Officer

The International Officer will work closely with the Full Time Officers and full time staff to help highlight, research and campaign on issues that affect International students in the University and Students’ Union.

LGBT+ Officer: Role Description 

Responsible to: 

Swansea University Students’ Union membership, especially students who self-define themselves as an LGBT+ student. 

Mission: 

The role of this executive member is to recognise and represent the views of those students at Swansea University Students’ Union executive level.  

Main Duties & Responsibilities: 

The LGBT+ Officer role will work closely with the Full Time Officers and full time Union staff to help highlight, research and campaign on issues that affect LGBT+ students across the University.  

It is also expected that the LGBT+ Officer will communicate closely with the LGBT+ society and LGBT+ groups in the local area to work together on campaigns and issues effecting LGBT+ people both locally and nationally.   

It is expected the LGBT+  Officer will keep up to date with the work done nationally and locally by the LGBT+ pressure groups and charities, as well as NUS, local and national government.  

It is expected the LGBT+ Officer will promote the message of the Union and encourage LGBT+ students to get involved in the Union.  

As a member of the executive team, it is expected that the LGBT+ Officer will attend executive officer meetings, as well as the Student Forum’s at which the officer can feedback to the membership.  

The LGBT+ Officer will be a key member of the LGBT+ and Liberation Forums.  

The LGBT+ officers will work together with the LGBT+ society to plan events and campaigns around LGBT+ issues.

Prif Ddyletswyddau a Chyfrifoldebau: 

Rôl y Swyddog LHDT+ yw cydweithio'n agos â’r Swyddogion Llawn Amser a staff yr Undeb i helpu amlygu, ymchwilio i ac ymgyrchu dros faterion sy’n effeithio ar fyfyrwyr LHDT+ yn y Brifysgol. 
 
Disgwylir i'r Swyddog LHDT+ gyfathrebu gyda’r gymdeithas LHDT+ a grwpiau LHDT+ lleol er mwyn cydweithio gyda nhw ar ymgyrchoedd a materion sy’n effeithio ar y gymuned LHDT+ yn lleol ac yn genedlaethol. 

Disgwylir i'r Swyddog LHDT+ wybod y wybodaeth ddiweddaraf a y gwaith sy'n cael ei wneud yn lleol ac yn genedlaethol gan ymgyrchoedd grwpiau LHDT+, yn ogystal â NUS a’r llywodraeth lleol a cenedlaethol. 

Disgwylir i'r Swyddog LHDT+ hyrwyddo neges yr Undeb ac annog myfyrwyr LHDT+ i gymryd rhan mewn digwyddiadau’r Undeb. 
 
Fel aelod o'r tîm gweithred, disgwylir i'r Swyddog LHDT+ fynychu cyfarfodydd Swyddogion gweithredu yn ogystal â'r Fforymau Myfyrwyr, lle gall y swyddog rhoi adborth i'r aelodaeth. 
 
Bydd y Swyddog LHDT+ yn aelod allweddol o’r fforymau LHDT+ a Rhyddhad. 
 
Bydd y Swyddogion LHDT+ yn cydweithio â’r gymdeithas LHDT+ i gynllunio digwyddiadau ac ymgyrchoedd ar faterion LGBT+.

Mature Students' Officer

This is a part-time voluntary position. Mae'r swydd yma'n rhan amser. Part Time Officers play a crucial role in engaging with various different groups of students and hold the Full Time Officers to account. They volunteer their energy and time. Mae Swyddogion Rhan Amser yn chwarae rhan hanfodol wrth ymgysylltu â grwpiau amrywiol o fyfyrwyr a dal y Swyddogion Llawn Amser i gyfrif. Maent yn gwirfoddoli eu hamser a'u hegni i gyn.
The Mature Students Officer role will work closely with the Full Time Officers and full time staff to help highlight, research and campaign on issues that affect Mature students across the University. It is also expected that the Mature Students Officer will arrange a Mature student’s forum or network.

Mental Health Awareness Officer

This is a part-time voluntary position. Mae'r swydd yma'n rhan amser. Part Time Officers play a crucial role in engaging with various different groups of students and hold the Full Time Officers to account. They volunteer their energy and time. Mae Swyddogion Rhan Amser yn chwarae rhan hanfodol wrth ymgysylltu â grwpiau amrywiol o fyfyrwyr a dal y Swyddogion Llawn Amser i gyfrif. Maent yn gwirfoddoli eu hamser a'u hegni i gyn.
The Mental Health Awareness Officer role will work closely with the Full Time Officers and full time staff to help highlight, research and campaign on raising awareness of mental health barriers, stigma and how to overcome these.

The Students with Disabilities Officer role will work closely with the Full Time Officers and full time Union staff to help highlight, research and campaign on issues that affect students with disabilities.

The Trans & Non-Binary Awareness Officer role will work closely with the LGBT+ Officers, the Full Time Officers and full time Union staff to help highlight, research and campaign on issues that affect Trans & Non-Binary issues as well as LGBT+ students across the University.

The Women’s Officer role will work closely with the Full Time Officers and full time Union staff to help highlight, research and campaign on issues affecting women in the University, Students’ Union and both locally and nationally.
