Chizi Phiri loves Swansea Students’ Union, and that’s why she stood for SU President in last year’s election. Here, she talks about why she loves it, and why you should too.
Since I was a fresher I’ve always been involved with the SU. Working part time at the Union alongside my studies really helped to shape my whole Uni experience and I can honestly say that I had the best three years of my life.
Through working in the Unions various retail shops such as Spar and Fulton Outfitters. Through working FRESHERS and some of the biggest student events in Wales. The SU equipped me with a wide range of skills that are invaluable to my future career. I have also had the opportunity to meet loads of diverse amazing people and make friends for life.
At the end of my time at Uni, I really felt like it was time I gave something back! That's why I decided to stand for President. I believe every student should have the same opportunity that I had to excel and thrive whilst earning money at uni but I know that not every student is engaged with the SU. It baffled me that students could go through their whole time at Uni without knowing what the SU is or what it does.
Having worked for the SU in the past, some students recognised me when I was standing in the election, which helped me to be confident, sociable and a friendly face for all.
This really shaped the type of President that I have become. Students often say that I'm a 'President for the people' and I love that. I believe that Swansea Union is a union with its members’ best interests at heart. Whether its through running campaigns such as 16 Days of Activism or LGBT+ Mental Health Awareness Week. Or through putting on fun events in Freshers’ or planning Varsity. Swansea Union puts it members first!
I feel proud to be part of an organisation that promotes inclusivity and diversity and I feel even more proud to be part of whole student movement that fights against injustice and inequality.
That is why I love Swansea Union, and you should, too.
