Elections

What are the Elections?

It's time we talked elections.

The elections are where you choose who's going to run the Students' Union for the next year and who's good enough to make sure your voice is heard. To give you an idea of how big we're talking... last year 48 students stood in our election and a whopping 22,203 votes were cast.

For some of you, this will be the first big Students' Union election you've been a part of. The rest of you might know all about it or will have a vague idea. To clear it up, we've put together a quick summary of what exactly is involved and what goes on...

1. What are the elections, what dates do I need to know and what should I expect?

Elections kick off with what we call the 'nominations period'. This lasts for 3 weeks and is basically the time you decide if you'd like to stand for one of these roles. If you think "yeah, go on then – I think I have what it takes to win an election and be the voice of 20,000 people" - then nominate yourself through our website at swansea-union.co.uk/elections.

Nominations are open Friday 2nd February – Friday 23rd February

When nominations close, there'll be 2 weeks where students who've decided to stand in the election work on their strategy to win. After these 2 weeks, voting opens and you'll have 5 days to vote for who you want to win.

Voting is open Monday 12th March – Friday 16th March

Then, on the Friday night, we'll announce who's won. Whoever wins will start their role at the end of June and begin to work on changing the lives of Swansea Uni students (no big deal!).

2. That all sounds pretty simple. What roles can I stand for and what do they involve?

There are 17 roles that Swansea Uni students can stand for; 5 are full time, 12 are part time. Click on the roles below to read the descriptions.

Full-time roles:

President

Education Officer

Sports Officer

Societies & Services Officer

Welfare Officer

Part-time roles:

Black Minority Ethnic Officer

Environment Officer

Ethics Officer

General Secretary

International Officer

LGBT+ Open Officer

LGBT+ Womens Officer

Mature Students Officer

Students with Disabilities Officer

Welsh Language Officer

Women's Officer

Mental Health Awareness Officer

3. Cool, so what's the difference between full-time and part-time roles?

Here's a table to make it simple...

Full-Time Roles

Part-Time Roles

Paid (with a salary of £18,263)

Not paid but comes with other benefits like free entry to events & freebies.

Full-Time (obviously... you'll need to either take a year out of your studies to complete the role or you'll need to have just finished studying at Swansea University)

Part-time (you'll have to make sure you have enough time to go to one or two meetings every month, run campaigns and pop along to student forums)

Means being a trustee for the Union. You'll have final say on matters that will impact the future of the Union; how we spend our money and how we focus our energy.

You won't be a trustee but you'll help the trustees make important decisions and have to vote on matters that impact the Union and our members.

4. Thanks for that. If I have any questions or if I’d like to find out a bit more, who should I speak to?

Pop an email to student.voice@swansea-union.co.uk and one of our Student Voice Coordinators will get back to you.

Beth yw'r Etholiadau?

Mae’n bryd i ni drafod yr etholiadau.

Yr etholiadau sy’n dy alluogi di i benderfynu pwy fydd yn rhedeg Undeb y Myfyrwyr dros y flwyddyn nesaf a phwy sy’n ddigon dda i sicrhau bod dy fod ti’n cael dweud dy ddweud. Mae’r etholiadau yn enfawr… llynedd, ymgeisiodd 48 o fyfyrwyr yn ein hetholiad a chafodd 22,203 o bleidleisiau eu bwrw.

Efallai mai hwn yw etholiad mawr Undeb y Myfyrwyr cyntaf i ti fod yn rhan ohono. Neu efallai dy fod ti’n gwybod amdano neu fod syniad gennyt ti. I wneud pethau’n haws, rydyn ni wedi rhoi canllaw syml at ei gilydd sy’n egluro beth sy’n mynd ymlaen…

1. Beth yw’r etholiadau, pa ddyddiadau sydd angen eu cofio a beth sydd i’w ddisgwyl?

Mae etholiadau’n dechrau gyda ‘chyfnod enwebu’. Mae hyn yn para am 3 wythnos ac yn rhoi’r cyfle i ti benderfynu os hoffet ti ymgeisio am un o’r rolau hyn. Os wyt ti’n meddwl "ie, pam lai – mae gen i beth sydd angen i ennill etholiad a bod yn llais i 20,000 o bobl" – ymgeisia drwy ein gwefan ar swansea-union.co.uk/elections.

Mae enwebiadau ar agor Dydd Gwener 2il Chwefror – Dydd Gwener 23ain Chwefror.

Ar ôl i enwebiadau gau, bydd yna bythefnos i’r myfyrwyr sy’n ymgeisio weithio ar eu strategaeth i ennill. Wedyn, bydd pleidleisio yn agor am 5 diwrnod er mwyn i ti benderfynu ar bwy fydd yn ennill.

Mae pleidleisio ar agor Dydd Llun 12fed Mawrth – 16eg Mawrth.

Yna, ar y nos Wener, byddwn ni’n cyhoeddi’r enillwyr. Bydd yr unigolion hynny yn dechrau eu swydd ddiwedd mis Mehefin a dechrau gweithio ar newid bywydau myfyrwyr Prifysgol Abertawe (dim byd mawr!).
