International Women's Day

It’s International Women’s Day on Thursday 8th March, but what does this actually mean, and how does it affect students? Your Part-time Women's Officer, Alex Anderson, has written a blog to give you the low-down.

This year, the focus is on #PressforProgress, which is all about gender inclusivity and motivating female friends and colleagues. Now, more than ever before, it’s so important to push for change, and ensure women can achieve the goals they want to achieve and pursue careers they want to pursue. Gender inclusivity and intersectional feminism are so important to the cause, and although we still have a long way to go, discussing and talking about these topics will only further push the movement and help women on an international scale.

The events we have running are as follows:

  • Wednesday 7th March, 2:30pm, Bay Campus, the Atrium:

Women in STEM networking event, where we’ll be showing a variety of short films and clips to encourage debate about how we can #PressforProgress. There will be cake!

  • Thursday 8th March, 1:45pm, Fulton, The Refectory:

Photoshoot of female students, please wear something purple to support the official colour of International Women’s Day! Until 3pm, cakes will also be sold in Fulton Lecture B for two charities – Project My Girl in Malawi and Women’s Aid Wales.

  • Thursday 8th March, 2pm, Fulton Seminar 2:

Film screening of The Colour Purple, which is fitting for the official purple colour.

  • Friday 9th March, 6:30pm, Fulton Lecture A:

Women in Politics. Many societies have come together to bring this cross-party panel on what it’s like to be a woman in politics, featuring guest speakers and a Q&A at the end of the discussion.

Come along to these exciting events and show your support for your female friends and co-workers!
