Volunteering Week

Student Volunteering Week 2020

Student Volunteering Week 2020 is well underway, running from 10th to 16th February!

Volunteering gives students practical skills that they can take into future careers, allows students to make local changes leading to large-scale change, allows students to tackle mental health and gives students a platform on which they can engage with social issues.

Here are just some of the volunteering opportunities happening in and around the Union, University and the local community.

Population Health Data Consumer Panel

Health Data Research UK culminates data from GPs, hospitals, and other healthcare settings across the UK and uses that data to make relevant changes to them. The general public is used at every step of the process to give their view, as everything they do is for the public benefit.

Volunteers take part in meetings 4 days a year to discuss research proposals, affect policymaking and review scientific information for a lay audience. But you don’t need to be strictly science-minded to get involved.

Health Volunteers

When health professionals do their training, they need involvement with members of the general public to learn about real-world scenarios. Swansea University trains many health professionals in areas including nursing, paramedic science, and audiology. Everyone at some point in their lives uses health services and public volunteers engaging in healthcare education programmes help students learn how to provide excellent care.

Health Volunteers have very flexible working hours and can pick and choose from a range of activities to be involved in throughout the year. Activities involve selecting and interviewing candidates, developing learning resources and being involved in teaching exercises.

Go Green for GWA

Varsity is a huge university event, a gem in many students' calendars, however, it can’t run smoothly without a lot of effort from staff and volunteers. This year we’re recruiting volunteers to litter pick across many of the Varsity Venues. Volunteers can expect to receive lunch, a T-shirt and tickets to the Men’s Rugby Match at Liberty Stadium in the evening.

If you want to get involved, the form can be found here. This opportunity is all thanks to Georgia-Rose Gleeson, the Union’s Environment Part-Time Officer. Speaking of which...

Part-Time Officers

Part-Time Officers represent different groups of students, run campaigns and hold the Full-time Officers to their word. They volunteer their time to make Uni life better for you - they're pretty special people.

A full list of our current part-time officers can be found here. Nominations for Part-Time Officers for 20/21 are now open! You can nominate yourself here until 21st February 2020.

Discovery

Discovery SVS, Swansea University's volunteer service covers such a breadth of volunteering. With over 600 volunteers across 30 projects there’s bound to be something for you. Opportunities include running crafts events for the elderly, beach cleans, food collection campaigns and running sports for kids.

If you want to get involved, here’s some details.

Sports Clubs and Societies

Swansea University Students’ Union facilitates over 150 societies and over 50 clubs. These student-led groups only flourish because of their amazing student committees. You may or may not already be a part of a club or society, but if you are, then you may have a few ideas about how you’d like that group to run, so why not consider running to be a member of the club/society committee? Have a chat with the current committee about what it’s like and share the ideas you have, they can give advice on which role is best for you and how to achieve your goals.

Egypt Centre

The Egypt centre is a museum of Egyptian antiquities, but also a resource to aid widening participation in Universities and a means of breaking down barriers between the University and local community. Volunteering shifts are flexible and open to anyone keen to help educate others. Current volunteers range from ages 10 to 87, from students to refuges to academics, across a wide range of nationalities.

Volunteering at the Egypt Centre is a great benefit for those wishing to enter teaching work, museum work or those in historical degree programmes.
