You might never have thought about running in an election before or you may not even know much about full-time officers at the university. Before you brush over the idea though, it’s worth considering a job that will give you graduate experience that is bound to blow all other CVs out of the water.
Earn circa £16k a year- being a full-time officer is a proper full-time job, complete with annual leave an office and terms of employment.
Learn professional skills- not many students leave university knowing how to chair a meeting, write an agenda or have been given the scope to make managerial decisions. Being an officer gives you this experience and the confidence to put your ideas in to action.
Make changes on campus- the full-time officer job actually allows you to make changes on campus and influence university management decisions. Think about it- is there something you’d really love to improve given the chance?
Have fun- the scope for job satisfaction is endless is this role. You’ll be making a real difference to students’ lives, sometimes even if they don’t know about it! You may be helping individual students with problems they’ve come to you to share or you might be helping create welcome events for freshers, either way you’ll feel like you’ve achieved a lot.
Represent students- you’ll be the voice for 15,000 students. Would you enjoy talking to new people and finding out what they want from their university experiences? There are some amazing ideas out there just waiting for you to put in place!
Take a study break- as long as you are a current student you can run in the elections. Do you want a sabbatical to learn new skills and boost your degree?
Meet new people- there aren’t many jobs out there that will let you meet so many new faces. You get to work in a great team with other officers, work alongside friendly staff and meet hundreds of students you might never have spoken to! Standing for election may sound scary but your friends get to support you the whole way through and you’ll meet great new people also running with you.
