Hello and Welcome to the official Swansea University Shotgun & Rifle page
Our club mainly focuses on .22 Calibre Small Bore Rifle target shooting at a nearby range. We are very much a mixed ability group that focuses on development so we can participate in local competitions, BUCS and Varsity. We also aim to give our members as many opportunities at new experiences as possible demonstrated last year by the variety of trips that ran to allow members to try out full bore rifles and clay pigeon shooting. Both trips were a great success and are being planned and expanded again for this year. We will be having 40 Rifle members this year, with the aim for everyone to get some competition experience through the year.
The joining fee (standard membership) is £75 for the year. This covers your insurance costs, use of the club range, use of arms, and transportation. An additional cost to consider is the ammunition used while training. And it is £10 for the shotgun side, additional costs such as ammunition, coaching, and shotgun hire are not included.
Due to the local lockdown we are unable to shoot at the rifle range so there is an initial joining fee of £15 to be paid on joining, and then the remaining £60 when we start shooting rifle again. Shotgun membership is still £10, to be paid on joining.
Shotgun a new section of the club, this being its second year of existence - we shoot on Wednesday afternoons, usually shooting at South Wales 2000 or Crynant shooting grounds, where we shoot either sporting or down-the-line clays. In terms of competitions, we attended BUCS in December, coming 13th overall, a great standing for a new club amongst several long-standing shooting clubs.
This year, we hope to attend again, as well as adding a few more shooting competitions before and after for some good practice and fun! An especially big competition for the coming year will be Varsity 2021, where we will be trialing our first shotgun competition with Cardiff University. If all goes well, we hope to have clay pigeon shooting included as its own sports event in Varsity 2022!
As a club, we are welcoming to all members, from beginners to weathered clay shooters, having a coached taster day penned in for beginners in October. We are looking to allow a maximum of 30 shotgun members this year, with the top 12 going to competitions as an A and B team.
It’s our hope that this year, we can continue becoming a cohesive team and further develop in events and numbers – we look forward to welcoming anyone who wants to give it a go!
