Hello there! My name is Liza and I’m the current Welfare Officer within the Students’ Union and I’m committed to improving the Welfare and Wellbeing of our student-body and representing the voices of all students within the University. In the last year, I had the huge task of supporting students through a wide range of welfare issues presented by the pandemic. Some of my biggest accomplishments include:
-
Providing multiple mental health workshops and working with Connect to counter student isolation-and-loneliness.
-
Providing a record-breaking amount of welfare, student safety and inclusion campaigns, which produced outcomes like a plaque of fundraising-achievement from Breast Cancer UK, the signing of the Welsh-Government Hate-Crime-Charter by the Union, and a higher representation of minority groups in the University.
-
Researching and resolving the wellbeing-counselling waiting time queries.
-
Providing immense wellbeing-support for international students, and free care-packages for them.
I have completed every COVID-19-adaptable point in my manifesto and with the network, knowledge, and skills I have from this previous year, I believe I’m extremely skilled and knowledgeable to carry student Welfare post-pandemic. If re-elected I will continue working on current projects and:
Improve our Students’ Safety.
The pandemic has introduced all new student safety concerns, I believe students have the right to feel safe within the Swansea Community, I aim to ensure this by:
-
Training all student facing staff and student leads adequately in signposting, racial equity, and mental health first aid on a mandatory basis to ensure they can handle cases of discrimination, distressed or struggling students adequately.
-
Working with the South-Wales-Police to provide additional resources and support within our heavily student occupied streets to ensure our students feel safer.
-
Introducing a Report and Support tab, embedded within our website to make reporting any harassment or complaints easier.
-
Proving Sexual-Misconduct and Abuse Training
Improve Student Mental Health.
The current high stress environment surrounding University naturally makes students extremely susceptible to mental health concerns, to counter this I aim to:
-
Reintroduce refreshers week.
-
Maintain self-certification within extenuating circumstances for Mental-Health concerns
-
Work with the Welsh Government to provide an equal opportunity fund for students coming out of the pandemic who have experienced hardships.
-
Encourage the Welsh Government to continue to provide consecutive Mental-Health support funding.
-
Continue to provide mental-health-workshops accompanied with certificates provided upon completion to improve student mental-health and employability.
-
Ensure recordings and distribution of lectures continues across colleges.
Bettering Student Housing within Private Accommodation and University Halls by:
-
Lobbying the university to form formal relationships between private student letting agencies to ensure there is support available to students being held in contracts.
-
Easing the process of contract releases in student halls.
-
Ensure the provision of emergency accommodation to support student welfare and have them readily available for students and promote the role of Welfare-Wardens.
I aim to increase inclusivity by:
-
Working alongside the NUS to decolonise our whole institution and further decrease the BAME attainment gap.
-
Continuing to fight for representation of under-represented groups ex. Mature, International, BAME etc.
