Personal Statement

Shw’mae , as you know by now my name is Macsen. I am a proud Welshman from Powys and I'm in my final year here at Swansea (Studying Geography BSc through the medium of Welsh). Over the years I have picked up a plethora of key skills to work brilliantly within the FTO team at Swansea University Students union. I have played rugby throughout my life as well as taking part in other team-based activities e.g fire cadets, The DofE award, and supervising at the SUs infamous JCs Bar (Trust me it can be a challenge with you cheeky lot??) which has taught me valuable skills such as critical thinking, teamwork, coachability, self-discipline and allowed me to learn and develop skills to support and represent the student community.

Manifesto

Target 1:Develop and create new opportnities to learn or use the Welsh Language through our societies and sports teams

In order to match the Welsh governemt goals of having a million Welsh speakers by 2050 I would like to create opportunities for the student body to learn Welsh via an innovative and fun way.

Welsh medium sports community:

  • By Following systems like Aberystwyths “Y Geltaidd”, I belive that this idea would be benficial to the whole student body by learning welsh in an informal way
  • Reinstating the Welsh Netball Team & endeavouring to have three other Welsh speaking teams (Alongside Rygbi-Tawe)

Establish Welsh repersentatives for each society and sports team as a comittee position (societies and sports teams with + 30 members):

  • Creating oppportunties for our sports club and society memebers to learn or practice Welsh.

Target 2: Increase the number of opportunities for students to learn Welsh

Secondly I would like to increase the number of formal and informal ways of learning Welsh at swansea by arranging Welsh events in more pleasureable ways

INFORMAL

  • Monthly Band performances by Welsh artists
  • Fortnightly Coffee mornings on Both campuses, to allow the student body to practice Welsh over some refreshments
  • Incentives for using Welsh at our venues (Deals!)

FORMAL

  • Pushing for night Welsh language classes to provide students and staff the opportunity to learn Welsh

Target 3: Increase engagemnt for Welsh Culture from non-welsh speakers

In order to evolve the understanding of the student body and staff of Wales and our culture, I would like to run events within and outside of SU

        INTERNAL EVENTS

Welsh Celebrations:

  • St.Dwynwens Day
  • St.Davids Day
  • And more ...

Welsh Week/Gwyl Cymraeg Abertawe:

  • Create a week-longevent celebrating Wales by holding events and workshops that are characteristic of Welsh culture and lanuage

Targed/Point 4: What its means to be Welsh and a Swansea Jack (trips)
Link up with societies to highlight the amazing local area activities.

  • Big Pitt
  • Saint Fagans
  • Visiting Welsh Castles
  • Walking trips to the Mountains
  • And more .....
