I see volunteering as doing more as it is often unpaid work. I have been a part of Discovery as one of the ambassadors for about 2 years. I have attended open days, and, on such days, I have had to interact with students and indeed other demography of people on why volunteering makes such a big impact, especially as its around what people are interested in & passionate about. Initiatives like this are a breath of fresh air, as they are quite different to the norm. It gives people the opportunity to do something different and perhaps explore ways through which their passions can be used to serve the community and, in the process, make a difference. I was a rep last session during my pre-masters. This required extra commitment from me in the form of attending meetings to make known some suggestions that have come from my mates. I also got involved in certain decision-making procedures. A major highlight of this time for me is when I volunteered to address new students of January 2023 of the college at the time. I spoke to them about what to expect on their learning journey with the college, which many told me was helpful because hearing from a fellow student like them encouraged them and gave them an idea of what to expect. It also helped to calm nerves for a lot of them. Being a discovery ambassador & a former student rep meant that I had to interact with other people on the team to get things done in a collaborative manner. Coupled with whatever support I’d be given, I believe these will help me in the role, if I am successful.
