Beyond the Emergency Department: A Doctor’s Perspective on Pre-Hospital Medicine - a society talk

About

Beyond the Emergency Department: A Doctor’s Perspective on Pre-Hospital Medicine

What does it take to work beyond the walls of the hospital?  - providing critical intervention and treatment away from the (relative) safety of the definitive care?

Join us at WEMS for an engaging evening with Dr Morgan from the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS), who will share their experience of working in Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM) and the journey that led them into this unique and crazy field.

Pre-hospital medicine presents a very different set of challenges to those encountered in the Emergency Department. From delivering emergency care in challenging environments to making critical decisions with limited resources, PHEM requires adaptability, clinical judgement and the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Through this talk, our guest speaker will explore their career journey, including how they became involved in PHEM, the training and experiences that shaped their career, and what day-to-day practice in this specialty looks like.

Whether you are interested in emergency medicine, critical care, retrieval medicine or simply curious about what happens before a patient reaches hospital, this is an opportunity to gain insight into an exciting and often less familiar area of medical practice.

What to expect:

  • An introduction to Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine and the role of EMRTS

  • An insight into the career journey and training pathway of a PHEM doctor

  • Real-world experiences of delivering emergency care outside the hospital environment

  • The challenges, rewards and realities of working in pre-hospital medicine

This talk is free for all WEMS members and is open to register for all students interested in emergency medicine, wilderness medicine, critical care and pre-hospital care. Come along, ask questions and discover what a career beyond the Emergency Department could look like.
