CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Responsible to: Trustees of Swansea University Students’ Union

Responsible for:  Implementing the overall direction and management of SUSU as
set out by trustees.

Main purpose

The main purpose of the role is to provide strategic direction to Swansea University Students’ Union in accordance with its members’ needs and expectations, lead the SUSU team and manage and develop SUSU’s Charitable activities and commercial arm – SUSU trading ltd.

A key feature of the role is managing external relationships with members, the university other agencies to promote the work of SUSU to the sector and beyond. This position acts as the head of paid service and is ultimately responsible for ensuring that SUSU acts legally and is fully compliant with all legal requirements under such acts as the education act. As a result, the holder of this position has the overall legal and financial responsibility of the organisation.

The main priorities for the post will be:

• To develop a strategic vision for SUSU, with the board of trustees in accordance with members needs and expectations, ensuring financial sustainability
• To be accountable to the Board for the co-development of strategic business, financial and operational plans along with the finance and commercial manager.
• To be accountable to the board for the development of charitable activities which include member focused and campaign activities including effective student engagement and enhance the SUSU brand
• To ensure compliance with legal requirements in accordance with the Education Acts, the Charity Act and with Charity Commission guidance on good governance.
• To lead, manage, develop and recruit staff

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a track record of leadership at Board level and a thorough understanding of the context in which we operate.  You will be strategic and visionary, while also possessing strong commercial and financial acumen and a passion for delivering services to the highest standards. The ideal candidate would have experience of working within both the Private and Charity sector. We are seeking an inspiring leader with excellent communication skills, you will operate with the highest levels of integrity, with excellent professional judgement and the ability to identify and implement positive change within the organisation.
