We know that students have raised concerns about proposed changes to Turnitin’s End-User License Agreement and whether submitted work could be used to train artificial intelligence.
Following concerns raised by universities and colleges through Universities and Colleges Information Systems Association (UCISA), Turnitin has postponed introducing the new agreement until September 2027. It has also committed to redrafting the agreement and working with UCISA to address the sector’s concerns and clarify how student and staff data will be protected.
Turnitin has confirmed that no student or staff data has been used to develop generative AI models or large language models. It has also stated that it has no plans to use student essays for this purpose.
Tom Navin, Vice President Education, said:
“I understand why the proposed changes caused concern. Students should be able to submit their academic work with confidence and understand clearly how it will be stored and used.
“I welcome the decision to postpone and redraft the agreement, but I will continue to follow the discussions closely and make sure students are kept informed of any future changes.”
“I’m committed to ensuring that student submissions are treated with integrity and that the handling of student data is undertaken ethically and responsibly.”
We will provide further updates if the position changes or additional information becomes available.
