Sailing

We are a friendly and welcoming club that caters for a range of sailors from complete beginners to seasoned pros. The club currently owns 12 fireflies and sails at Tata Steel Sailing club in Port Talbot. We run sailing sessions for all members on Wednesday afternoons followed by epic socials in the evening.

The sailing club has competitive racing teams with an action packed race calendar that takes them all over the country to compete against other universities. We compete in Team Racing across the country as well as competing at the annual Yachting, Fleet Racing and Match Racing National competitions. We run our own sailing event annually - The Swansea Spartan - in which other universities join us in Swansea for a weekend of racing as well as two socials they will never forget! In 2017 we held our biggest event so far and it was a success all round, despite the difficult weather.

Throughout the year we run RYA courses including level 2, powerboat and First Aid for club members. This gives you a really good chance to gain qualifications and much needed knowledge on how to sail.

This summer we also went on tour as a club to Croatia, where 30 of us sailed around from island to island.

Recently we held our own Swansea Spartan:

14 teams from various uni’s (including from East England!) came to the Swansea Spartan event. We kicked off the weekend with an obligatory Toot. Saturday morning was an early and hungover start for all but everyone pulled together to rig and we kicked off the racing by 10. With three flights of fireflies out we sped through 70 races.Everyone headed back to Swansea for a quick nap before whipping their togas on and heading to a rowdy curry at the Maharani Curry house. After two very chaotic curry sittings everyone met up in Bambu for a boogey - On the Sunday 11 teams made it to the club, strong winds meant that we brought it down to 2 flights of boats. We got through 33 races and then 12 races made up the petite final and grand final. Final results were Exeter Red in 3rd, Portswood Pirates in 2nd and Swansea Alumni Sailing came in 1st. Then Alumni were awarded with the Stanley Mon Cup, presented to the Commodore Bella by Richard Stanley. Well done to SarahLouis and everyone who helped run the event, and congratulations to the Alumni for winning!

We look forward to our mid-season training camp in the new year ahead of BUSA qualifiers.
