We are proud to be one of the 50 Students’ Unions nationwide that have united in support of trans rights
Swansea University Students’ Union stands with trans students.
We are proud to be one of the 50 Students’ Unions nationwide that have united in support of trans rights following the recent ruling by the UK Supreme Court.

In December 2023, the Supreme Court ruled that, under the Equality Act 2010, the legal definition of the word “woman” refers to biological sex.
While this does not remove protections for trans people under the Equality Act, it raises serious concerns about the potential exclusion of trans people - particularly trans women without a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) - from women-only spaces, services, and opportunities.
This ruling has created uncertainty and anxiety for many, and risks being used to justify transphobic interpretations of the law.
Trans rights are human rights, and we believe in a campus and a community where everyone, regardless of gender identity, is respected, supported, and celebrated.
For trans students, it’s about feeling seen, safe, and supported in everyday life - from sports teams and societies, to toilets and changing rooms, to how they’re represented and protected on campus.
We affirm clearly and loudly:
We remain committed to working alongside trans students and staff to ensure Swansea University and Students' Union remain welcoming and inclusive places for all.
We will continue to advocate for trans rights, push for inclusive policies, and challenge any form of discrimination or harm aimed at our community.
