We, the Greeks and the Cypriots, the Hellenic Society, are here to represent all those notions and many more that you may have come across in your life.
Let me first introduce ourselves and talk a bit about Greece and Cyprus. Greece, or officially Hellas (in Greek: ?????), is a country in Southern Europe and a Member State of the European Union and it marks the borders of the European Continent, with Athens being its capital city. The language spoken and maybe you may have heard us speaking or even been taught in school is Greek and uses its own alphabet –well, it’s all Greek to me! It is one of the most ancient and rich languages in history as the Greek civilization is. It is the homeland of democracy and as you may have been bombarded in school many philosophers like Aristotle and Plato as well as mathematicians like Pythagoras to orators and lawmakers like Lysias and Lykourgos as well as doctors like Hippocrates are Greeks!
Of course, we don’t look or talk like them nowadays but we and you use their intelligence in our everyday life.
This legacy and values we represent here in Swansea. We also represent the Greek beauty, the weather, the islands, the Greek music like Zorba and Syrtaki and local cuisine like feta, souvlaki, pastitsio and mousaka or even the Greek coffee, if you have seen us with a strange but nonetheless tasty drink on our hands.
Enough with the Greeks! What are Cyprus and the Cypriots? Cyprus (in Greek: ??p??a?? ??µ???at?a) is an island country in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and the third largest and most populous island in the Mediterranean as well as new Member State of the European Union, with Nicosia being its capital city.
The language spoken is Cypriot Greek, a variety of Modern Greek, although English are widely spoken and used in everyday life. It is well-known to British people because it had been part of the British Empire for 82 years – they use hand drive cars! Apart from that it is very well known for its beautiful weather (even better than Greece’s) and its stunning beaches and resorts like Ayia Napa where you have likely been during summer vacations.
It has also a tradition in culture, especially art, music and literature as well as in cuisine with its delicious halloumi, sheftalia, lountza and many more tastes which you may try if you join an event of our Society. Unfortunately, Cyprus faces an inveterate diplomatic problem with Turkey, the Cyprus dispute, namely the creation of a pseudo-state in the occupied by Turkey territory of Cyprus. In the deep of history, Greece and Cyprus were fraternal countries and referred as Hellenic Community and that is how the name of our Society is derived.
It is not a secret that both Greece and Cyprus face hard financial problems and that their populations along with the governments struggle to achieve a recovery of their economies. However, we, the Hellenic Society, are here to promote the Hellenism by organizing events in which you will be able to discover what Greek civilization, food, music, dance and hospitality mean.
We are planning to distribute Christmas Greek noshes after January exams, organize Greek nights, parties and dance classes in association with the Dance Society, the President of which is Cypriot! In other words, we’ll make you feel like Hellenes (Greeks & Cypriots)!

Rydym ni, y bobl Groegaidd a’r Cypriots, y Gymdeithas Hellenic, yma i gynrychioli’r holl syniadau yna a llawer mwy efallai eich fod wedi dod ar draws yn eich bywyd.
Yn gyntaf, gad i mi gyflwyno ein hun a thrafod am Groeg a Chyprus. Gwlad Groeg, neu yn swyddogol hellad (yn Groeg) yw wlad mewn de Ewrop ac yn aelod o’r UE ac mae’n marcio ffiniau Ewrop, gydag Athens fel Prif Ddinas. Yr iaith sy’n cael ei siarad, ac efallai eich bod chi wedi clywed ni’n siarad yr iaith neu wedi dysgu’r iaith yn yr ysgol, yw Groeg ac mae’n defnyddio gwyddor ei hun – mae’n Groeg i mi! Mae’n un o’r ieithoedd hynaf a mwyaf cyfoeth mewn hanes, fel diwylliant Groegaidd. Mae’n cartref i ddemocratiaeth ac rwy’n siwr yr ydych wedi astudio rhain yn yr ysgol: athronwyr fel Aristotle a Plato yn ogystal â mathemategwyr fel Pythagoras i areithwyr a deddfwyr fel Lysias a Lykourgos a meddygon fel Hippocrates. Mae pob yn yn Groegaidd! Wrth gwrs, nad ydym yn edrych neu’n siarad fel nhw heddiw, ond rydym ni a rydych chi yn defnyddio eu gwybodaeth mewn bywyd bob dydd. Mae’r etifeddiaeth a’r gwerthoedd hyn yr ydym yn gwerthfawrogi yma yn Abertawe. Rydym hefyd yn cynrychioli prydferthwch Groegaidd, y tywydd, cerddoriaeth Groegaidd fel Zorba a Syrtaki a bwyd lleol fel feta, souvlaki, pastitsio a mousaka neu hyd yn oed coffi Groeg, os ydych wedi gweld ni gyda diod rhyfedd ond blasus.
Digon am y bobl Groeg! Beth yr Cyprus a’r Cypriots? Cyprus (mewn Groeg) yw gwlad ynysol ym Môr y Canoldir dwyreiniol a’r ynys trydydd mwyaf a gyda’r poblogaeth mwyaf ym Mor y Canoldir yn ogystal ag aelod newydd o’r UE, gyda Nicosia fel ei Phrif Ddinas. Yr iaith sy’n cael ei siarad yw Groeg Cypriot, amrywiad o Groeg cyfoes, ond mae Saesneg yn cael ei siarad llawer ac mewn bywyd bob dydd. Mae’n ffaith i bobl Prydeinig achos maent wedi bod yn rhan o’r Ymerodraeth Prydeinig ers 82 blynedd – maent yn defnyddio ceir gyriant llaw! Ar wahân i hynny, mae nifer o bobl yn gwybod am ei thywydd hyfryd (hyd yn oed yn well na thywydd Gwlad Groeg) a’i thraethau hir a llefydd fel Ayia Napa lle mae’n debyf eich bod chi wedi ymweld ag yn ystod yr haf. Mae hefyd ganddo draddodiad mewn diwylliant, yn enwedig celf, cerddoriaeth, llenyddiaeth yn ogystal â bwyd fel halloumi, sheftalia, lountza a llawer mwy o flasau efallai hoffech drio mewn digwyddiad yn ein cymdeithas. Yn anffodus, mae Cyprus yn wynebu brwydro, fel cread o wladwriaeth pseudo mewn ardal o Dwrci sy’n perthyn i Gyrpus. Mewn hanes dwfn, roedd Gwlad Groeg a Chyprus yn gwledydd brodorol ac yn cael eu galw’n Cymuned Hellenic a dyna lee ddaeth ein enw o.
Nid yw’n gyfrinach fod Gwlad Groeg a Chyprus yn wynebu problemau ariannol a bod eu poblogaethau ynghyd â phroblemau’r llywodraeth, yn methu i gyrraedd adfywiant o’r economi. Fodd bynnag, rydym ni, y Gymdeithas Hellenic, yma i hybu Helleniaeth gan drefnu digwyddiadau lle gallwch chi ddarganfod beth mae diwylliant, bwyd, cerddoriaeth, dawns a lletygarwch yn meddwl. Rydym yn bwriadu darparu bwydydd Groegaidd Nadolig ar ôl arholiadau ym mis Ionawr, trefnu nosweithiau, partïon a gwersi dawns Groeg, mewn partneriaeth gyda’r Gymdeithas Ddawns, lle bod y Llywydd yn Cypriot! Mewn geiriau arall, byddem ni’n gwneud i chi deimlo’n Hellenaidd (Grogwyr a Chypriots!) Felly, os hoffech chi ymuno a bod yn rhan o daith trofannol i Wlad Groeg a Chyrpus, ewch ar wefan yr UM a ffeindiwch ni o dan yr adran Cymdeithasau Ffydd a Diwylliannol. Y gost yw £4 y flwyddyn yn unig, os ydych chi’n aelod o Brifysgol Abertawe! Os nad ydych chi, y gost yw £6.
