16Days

16 Days of Activism

From 25th November – 10th December, the Students’ Union will be supporting the #16Days of Activism campaign. This campaign works towards ending violence against women and children, and helps to raise awareness of this too often neglected topic.

The Students’ Union ensures all students are safe within the Union, yet violence against women is still happening all over the world. According to Statistics from UNwomen.org:

  • It’s estimated that 35% of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence by a non-partner in their lifetime. Some national studies show that up to 70% of women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence from a partner in their lifetime.
  • At least 200 million women and girls alive today have undergone female genital mutilation in the 30 countries with representative data on prevalence. In most of these countries, the majority of girls were cut before age 5.
  • Worldwide, almost 750 million women and girls alive today were married before their 18th birthday. Child marriage is more common in West and Central Africa, where over 4 in 10 girls were married before age 18, and about 1 in 7 were married or in union before age 15.

It’s time to step up and support campaigns like #16Days of Activism to ensure we’re doing the best we can to raise awareness of these issues. The Union has set up many events:

  • 28th November, 11am-3pm: Picket making in 52°
  • 29th November, 11am-3pm: Picket making in JC's
  • 29th November, 9pm: Reclaim the Night Women’s March (get your best picket slogans and orange t-shirts out!)
  • 1st December: Orange Tooters
  • 4th December, 7-8pm: #16Days Takeover in JC's
  • 5th December, 7-8pm: #16Days Takeover in 52°
  • 5th December, 7-8.30pm: Girls-only DJ class
  • 7th December, 4-6pm: #Fempowerment with guest speakers

Get involved with the cause and be the voice for all women and children who don’t have one.
