NUS Award wins

We are celebrating not one, not two, but THREE award wins from the NUS Wales Conference last week. We took home Officer Team of the Year, Campaign of the Year and the Liberation and Equality award!

Here are a few of the reasons why....

  • Election of the first ever Welsh Affairs Officer
  • Election of the first ever all female officer team in the history of Swansea Students' Union!
  • Powered together to reach out to help the students affected in the Bolton accomodation fire, traveling 788.5km (10.5 hours) to personally deliver items
  • Organised campaigns and events on campus such as Ladies Day, House things? and LGBT+ History Month
  • Contributed to Global Entrepreneurship week
  • Helped launch the first SU app
  • Launched Rep of the month and Society of the month to reward the hard work of students
  • Worked on a bid for the Welsh Government to focus on Mental Health and wellbeing on campus, to offer students the opportunity to access free mental health training and become leaders of a community of connectors

Campaign of the Year - MOVEMBER

  • Offered 3 hour suicide prevention training sessions for students
  • Held meet ups and coffee mornings at our Union Bars and placed coasters from the Cameron Trust at all our venues as a reminder 'not to bottle it up' and to speak about Mental Health
  • Offered free use of the astro-turfs on campus for sport every wednesday
  • Donated all entry fees for the Swansea Uni RFC vs Cardiff Uni RFC to the charity and encouraged all sport clubs and societies to get involved in the campaign by holding their own events and fundraisers
  • Hosted a charity 'Mo'Ball' where we asked students to grab their 'mo'mates' and join us to support an amazing cause, transforming Fulton House into the classiest of settings for a black-tie bash where we gave our awards to reward fundraising efforts
  • Supported a local charity from Pembrokeshire 'Get the Boys a lift' with a donation of £500, which covered one of the charity's counsellors for a whole month.

Liberation and Equality - Black History Month

  • Organised a successful month of events to celebrate Black History Month during October, despite it being the busiest period of the year - Freshers.
  • Recognised and honoured the often-overlooked contributions of Black history and celebrated it's diversity through a month of events aimed at raising the profile of Black and Ethnic Minority heritage and culture
  • Focused on four main themes throughout the month - awareness, mental health, afrofusion and showcase with events such as a panel talk, debate night, film nights, Eva Lazarus gig and a Cultural Ball
