Objectives

The goal of the Diwrnod Shwmae Su’mae campaign was to celebrate the Welsh language and encourage its everyday use by students and staff, reinforcing the message that Welsh belongs to everyone - fluent speakers, learners, and beginners alike. Delivered as part of the national Shwmae Su’mae Day celebrations, the campaign aimed to increase confidence in starting conversations in Welsh and to visibly embed the language within Students’ Union spaces and culture.

The campaign aligned with the national initiative led by Mentrau Iaith Cymru and Visit Wales, supporting the annual celebration first launched in 2013 and now marked across Wales each year.

Planned Actions

National Awareness Alignment: Deliver an online campaign on 15 October 2025 in line with the national Shwmae Su’mae Day celebrations.

Welsh Visibility Through Video: Create and share a video showcasing Students’ Union departments actively using Welsh, highlighting the everyday visibility and normalisation of the language within the SU.

Educational Campaign Content: Share posts explaining the purpose of Shwmae Su’mae Day, including:

  • Celebrating the Welsh language and its speakers.

  • Reinforcing that Welsh belongs to everyone.

  • Encouraging people to start conversations using “Shwmae”, “Su’mae”, or “Shwdi” in everyday settings.

Celebration of National Context: Highlight the history of Shwmae Su’mae Day, first held in 2013 and now celebrated annually across Wales.

Signposting to Resources: Direct students to official campaign resources such as stickers, selfie frames, speech bubbles, playlists, and downloadable social media assets.

Digital Amplification: Repost content from Shwmae Su’mae, Mentrau Iaith Cymru, and partner organisations to increase reach and alignment with national messaging.
