The Sports Officer is focused on overseeing the running of sports clubs on campus and ensuring that sports team members gain fair representation and support from the Union and University. Imogen is the person to see if you need any advice or information on sports clubs at University. 

‘This is a very important year for sport moving into the Students’ Union therefore I want to make the transition as smooth as possible, I also want to support small and developing clubs so that they can get as much out of sport as possible.’

Why should you GIVE IT A GO at a society?

On the 21st January GIVE IT A GO week is back in Swansea where the Students’ Union sports clubs and societies put on loads of events for you to take part in and try out before signing up. Most of these are free and very cheap so make sure you get involved. As the Sports Officer I can easily persuade you to join a sports club so I have been given the challenge to tell you about societies. I have many friends involved with societies and before joining the students’ union I probably underestimated how fantastic societies are and how hard the union works to provide for all of them. Using the word SOCIETY here are my top reasons of why you should GIVE IT A GO this week.

SOCIABLE – Some of my lifelong friends were made through my club and I know that societies are the same, whether it is a party night in Sin City or a quiet film night at Taliesin you get to hang out and bond with people that have something in common with.

OPPORTUINTES –being part of a society offers amazing opportunities whether you are part of it or not, many get to visit specialists and famous people within that area. It also provides the opportunity to show off your talents and work with other people, A Night at the Musicals shows how the performing arts societies can work together as well as providing the spectators with the opportunity to watch something fabulous.

COMMUNITY – society and sports club life becomes your family and community for many people, they know what you like and what you don’t, whether this is a small society with 10 members or one with over 500 you feel like you are part of something that has its own name, logo, bank account and pigeon hole.

INDIVIDUAL - every society has a unique personality about it, with over 80 to choose from you can choose the exact one that fits in with you and helps you to grow as a person. Being part of the society helps you grow as an individual and will hopefully help you in the future.

EMPLOYABILITY – I know this sounds very cliché but the skills you get for being a member of a society or a committee member makes you more employable, you learn team work, time keeping, organisation, management, people skills and a whole lot more. Go to the employability fair on the 21st January and see what skills you have picked up that can transferred to your CV.

TALENTED – whether you have one or many talents there is a space to show them off to everyone within the University. SHOW OF YOUR TALENT and GIVE IT A GO this week.

YUMMY – Lots of society events have free food to keep you all entertained which is always a winner!
